How to test an AI voice agent before it takes real customer calls
Test an AI voice agent in three layers before launch. First, run an automatic check of what it says: greeting, facts, refusals, transfer and goodbye. Second, place about twenty real phone calls covering Indian names, numbers, accents, noise, interruptions and silence. Third, launch in stages, starting with after-hours or overflow calls, and review every transcript in the first week.
- A text preview tests what the agent says, but only a real call tests how well it hears.
- Your test script should include local names, localities, rupee amounts, phone numbers and a Hinglish sentence.
- Test the paths that go wrong: interruptions, silence, a request for a person and a question it cannot answer.
- Launch on after-hours or overflow calls first, then widen once transcripts look right.
- Retest after every change to the prompt, knowledge base, voice or number.
Why a voice agent needs more testing than a chatbot
A chatbot either gives a good reply or it does not, and you can read the whole conversation in seconds. A phone call adds things that never appear in a text preview: how the agent hears a name over a weak signal, how long it pauses, whether it talks over the caller, and what happens when nobody speaks.
Customers are also less forgiving on the phone. One confusing call, and many people will not call back. So it is worth an afternoon of structured testing before you put the agent on your main number. If you have not built the agent yet, start with setting up an AI voice agent.
Layer 1: an automatic check of what the agent says
On Convo360, press Check on a calling agent on the Agents page. In about half a minute it holds seven short test conversations with the agent exactly as it is set up, including its instructions, knowledge base, flow and tools:
- Opening the call: does it use your own opening line, briefly?
- "What do you do?": does it explain your business in a sentence or two?
- Something you do not offer: does it say so, instead of stretching the truth?
- A fact it may not have: does it avoid inventing timings, prices or addresses?
- Asked for a person: does it transfer or offer a callback, and never promise a transfer it cannot make?
- A one-word answer: does it carry on in the same language without ending the call?
- Goodbye: does it say a short goodbye and hang up?
Each item is marked good, to look at, or to fix, with the conversation it is based on. The check also flags settings such as a missing knowledge base, no transfer number, or instructions long enough to slow every answer. It runs on your own OpenAI key and costs about what a two-minute call does. It does not test hearing, which is what the next layer is for.
Layer 2: twenty real test calls
Write a test sheet before you dial. Each row is one call with a goal and what "pass" looks like.
| Test | What to say | Pass if |
|---|---|---|
| Names | "I'm Venkatesh Subramanian" or "Shraddha Kulkarni" | Name is repeated back correctly |
| Places | "Kandivali West", "Gachibowli", "Salt Lake Sector 5" | Locality captured correctly |
| Numbers | A 10-digit mobile number, a pin code, ₹4,750 | Read back in natural groups |
| Language | Start in Hindi, switch to English mid-sentence | Agent follows the caller's language |
| Interruptions | Cut in to correct a date; say only "haan" | Stops for the correction, carries on for haan |
| Noise | Call from a shop or roadside | Agent does not stop at random |
| Silence | Say nothing for a while | Call ends cleanly, not left hanging |
| Out of scope | Ask something your business does not do | Agent says so and offers help |
| Person | "Mujhe kisi insaan se baat karni hai" | Transfer or callback offer |
Use different people and different phones, on at least two telecom networks, and one call on speakerphone. Your staff are the best testers because they know what customers really ask.
What to check after each test call
- The transcript. In Calls, compare what the agent heard with what was said. Misheard names and numbers are the most common problem.
- The AI summary. Would a colleague understand what happened from the summary alone?
- The pause before each reply. If callers kept saying "hello?", replies are too slow. See why half a second matters.
- Post-call actions. Did the WhatsApp follow-up, CRM lead or team notification fire with the right details?
- Language and tone. Did it sound like your business, and did it stay in the caller's language?
Fix one thing at a time, then repeat only the tests that failed. Changing three settings at once makes it impossible to know which change helped.
Layer 3: a staged launch
Even a well-tested agent meets callers you did not imagine. Limit the risk by widening the scope in steps:
- After-hours calls first, when the alternative is no answer at all. See after-hours AI calls.
- Overflow next, when your team is busy.
- One line or one campaign during the day.
- All calls once a week of transcripts looks right.
For outbound campaigns, start with a small batch of contacts who already know you, check the results, and only then dial the full list. Every outbound list still needs DND scrubbing and the right number series under TRAI's rules.
Keep testing after launch
An agent that passed last month can drift when you edit the prompt, add a document, change the voice or the AI model is updated by its provider. Treat any of these as a reason to retest.
Convo360 helps here: every night, each calling agent that took a call in the last week, or was changed since its last check, is checked automatically at no cost to you. The latest result shows under the agent's name on the Agents page, and you can click it to see the details. Pair that with a weekly read of ten random call transcripts, and you will catch most problems before customers complain.
More detail is in the voice docs. AI voice calls are on the Pro plan at ₹2,999 per month, excluding 18% GST, with a 14-day free trial.
Step by step
- Run the automatic CheckPress Check on the calling agent and fix anything marked to fix, such as invented facts or a missing transfer number.
- Write a twenty-call test sheetList names, localities, numbers, language switches, interruptions, noise, silence, out-of-scope questions and a request for a person.
- Place real calls on different phonesUse at least two networks, a noisy place and speakerphone, with staff who know real customer questions.
- Review transcripts and fix one thingCompare what the agent heard with what was said in Calls, change one setting, and repeat only the failed tests.
- Launch in stagesStart with after-hours or overflow calls, then one line, then all calls once a week of transcripts looks right.
- Retest after every changeRun the Check again after editing the prompt, knowledge base, voice or number, and read ten transcripts weekly.

Frequently asked questions
How many test calls should I make before launching an AI voice agent?
About twenty structured calls is a practical minimum, covering names, numbers, languages, interruptions, noise, silence and requests for a person. Use different people, phones and networks, then retest only what failed after each fix.
Can I test a voice agent without making phone calls?
Partly. An automatic check or text preview shows what the agent says and whether it invents facts. It cannot show how well the agent hears speech on a phone line, so real test calls are still essential.
What is the most common problem found in voice agent testing?
Misheard names, localities and numbers are among the most common. Include local names, pin codes, phone numbers and rupee amounts in your test script, and check the transcript of every test call against what was actually said.
Should an AI voice agent go live on all calls at once?
It is safer to launch in stages: after-hours calls first, then overflow, then one line, then all calls. Each stage gives you real transcripts to review before more customers reach the agent.
Does Convo360 check voice agents automatically?
Yes. The Check button runs seven short test conversations and flags problems. Every night, calling agents that took calls in the last week or were changed are checked automatically at no cost, with the result shown on the Agents page.
